The Elizabeth River Project has asked for our help in opening up a view shed from their perimeter trail along Paradise Creek. Ultimately, they would like a 300 yard long view shed opened up by removing small caliper (1.5'"to 2") invasive Bradford Pear and Sweet Gum trees along their trail embankment. This is likely not possible to be accomplished in one morning, so it may take multiple work days to meet their ultimate request. They will define the limits of the work. We have 4 volunteers with power pole saws that will do a majority of the tree cutting, but we will need 3-4 volunteers per sawyer to do some lopping and laying the small trees down on the embankment. I am looking for 16 volunteers at this time to help the sawyers, but no volunteers will be turned away.
If you have a powered pole saw and are comfortable in cutting down these small trees, please let me know so we can get more volunteers to assist.
The work day is scheduled for Wednesday May 25th from 9:00 to 12:00. at Paradise Creek Nature Park, 1141 Victory Boulevard, Portsmouth , VA. Wear durable clothing and closed toe shoes. Bring Loppers, hand saws, eye protection, leather gloves and plenty of water. This work may be physically challenging, similar to work on the AT.
