    This Event has been Canceled.

    A.T. Vista - August 5 - 8, 2022

    The Trail is Calling!

We know it has been since 2017 that we’ve been together to spend time on the trail, learn, and socialize together.  This inaugural A.T. Vista program is being planned to continue the sharing of the great camaraderie of kindred spirits that cherish the Appalachian Trail.

Check out photos from A.T. Vista 2021 – Celebrating 100 Years

The in-person program is scheduled for August 5-8, 2022, at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz.

The details of this event will appear here as they are developed. Meanwhile subscribe to the monthly newsletter and volunteer to help run the conference.

The Vista is in lieu of the ATC Biennial and is being sponsored by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference.  We have put together an exciting program of hikes, workshops and excursions. which can be viewed by going to our website - atvista2022.org

SUNY New Paltz is a beautiful venue, in reasonable proximity to wonderful hiking on the AT in northern NJ and New York, as well as to hikes in Minnewaska State Park, the Shawangunk Mountains, the Long Path, Mohonk Preserve, the Catskills, Harriman State Park and other parks east of the Hudson.  Proposed hikes are listed on the website.

If you are interested in being a hike leader for the upcoming Vista please email me or Steve Weissman at sweissman@weissmanmintz.com.  Also, we'd very much appreciate it if you'd let your fellow club members and hiking companions know about the Vista and that we are recruiting hike leaders.  The hikes listed on the website can be modified to accommodate your interests.  Also, we are also open to adding hikes.

Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or suggestions.

TATC CABIN WORK TRIP-- Nov. 5th, 6th, 7th (Friday-- Sunday); trip leader: Bob Adkisson-- 627 5514 or cabin@tidewateratc.com-- (please, you must contact me to let me know if you are interested in attending this maintenance / orientation trip to the club cabin in Nelson County, Va.- I will have a sign up sheet and will keep the number of participants low, at 8 people total; there will be a wait list if it is needed, so if you sign up and then your plans change, let the trip leader know ASAP) The Autumn trip is when we usually chainsaw firewood, cut and stack, move and split it. If anyone would like to bring their own saw, to supplement the club saw I will bring, that would be very helpful. The cabin sleeps 12 (6 upstairs, mostly in single bunks, and 6 down stairs-- though all the downstairs bunks are extra wide, for 2 people), but people can tent out nearby if they prefer. Usually there is a community meal but with things the way they are (Covid) everyone will be on their own for ALL meals. There is a 2 burner propane cookstove, and a wood burning cookstove, and all the pots/pans/dishes/cups/cutlery we will need. The cabin spring is running, so there should be water available. Bring a good sleeping bag, sleeping pad, warm clothes, work gloves, boots, and food. There may be time for a hike (with some light trail work?) Saturday afternoon, or on Sunday, if the weather is cooperative. For new members interested in qualifying to rent the club cabin on their own in the future, this is your ticket to do that-- we will make time to go over the rules and workings of the cabin, teach new members how to take care of it, open and close it, etc. ALL PARTICIPANTS NEED TO BE VACCINATED TO ATTEND THIS WORK TRIP

    When: Thursday, Nov 4, 2021 at 10am-1:00pm

Where: Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve, Portsmouth https://www.hofflercreek.org/visit

This is a call for volunteers to join up and help clean out invasive vines in this142-acre preserve in the Hoffler Creek watershed. Goats have been feeding on the thick weeds since 9/17 which should now allow us to get in there and take down some invasive vines. We will meet Heather at the Visitor’s Center, where she will explain what she would like us to do. We need 10 or so volunteers to show up and join the fun. No experience is necessary. Masks will NOT be required if you are fully vaccinated for COVID 19. Wear long pants and long sleeve shirts to protect from ticks, heavy-duty gloves and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Hats, bug repellant, and sunscreen are optional. Bring your favorite hand and small battery-operated tools Also, bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Who knows, there may even be an opportunity for lunch or ice cream at the end of the effort?

First Landing State Park TATC Structures and Trails Evaluation

    Dear TATC Friends,

A few weeks ago you expressed an interest in helping with the mapping structures and trail evaluations in First Landing State Park. Thank you for your patience. I think we have now worked out most of the "bugs" in the process.

We have set up two training dates where you will be able to ask questions and sign up to survey a Park Trail. It is anticipated that the training should last approximately an hour. The dates/times are: 9:00 AM Friday October 29th or 9:00 AM Saturday October 30th. You will need to only attend one of the training sessions.

Location: First Landing State Park Picnic Area Shelter (Land Side). From Shore Drive Eastbound turn RIGHT at the stoplight into the Park (Cypress Swamp Road). At the contact station (Tool Booth), if you don't have a park pass, tell the attendant that you are attending a meeting for volunteers and you will receive a free parking pass. After the contact station, take an immediate right turn into the picnic area parking lot. The shelter is towards the back on the right.

    You will need to bring:

Your GPS unit and/or your cell phone with the Avenza app if you have them. Please set them to degrees/ minutes/seconds. If you don't have a GPS unit please come, we need people to score the trails and structures on the survey form.

We will set up teams of three persons (minimum of 2) to do the actual surveys. The survey can be conducted anytime at your convenience after the training.

Bring your face mask should we need to move the event indoors or to use the restroom.

    Important:

In Order to participate you must register with Ellis Malabad, malabad2@gmail.com by 5:00 PM Wednesday October 27th.  Please indicate which session you will be attending as I need to turn a roster to the Park prior to the training.

Again, thank you for your interest in the TATC and First Landing State Park.
