“Giant Bamboo” Hike
Please join Stephanie Stringer and Steve Clayton for one of our favorite area hikes at Mariners Lake Natural Area in Newport News
Date: Saturday, March 19
Time: Meet at 9:15; the hike begins at 9:30 and ends between 12 and 1 pm.
Location: Mariners Museum - 100 Museum Dr, Newport News, VA 23606
Bathroom at start of hike: Porta potties in parking lot
Description: We’ll start the hike on the Noland Trail, departing from the Museum parking lot. After about a half mile on the Noland Trail, we’ll cross Warwick Boulevard at a crosswalk and continue our hike on the Natural Area Trail. This 5-6 mile hike is partly lakeside. It is a beautiful, winding, heavily wooded trail with rolling hills and plenty of roots, so please consider hiking poles. Deep in the interior of this hike is an amazing surprise – a large grove of giant bamboo!! Quite unusual and its origins are a mystery. A delightful surprise, even when you are expecting it. Dogs are not allowed in this park.
Lunch is optional back at the Mariners Museum café, near where we parked. People can order lunch at the counter and eat either inside or on the outside patio. Bathrooms will be available inside the Museum without paying a fee.
Suggestions: Wear comfortable footwear and clothing appropriate for the weather conditions. Bring water, sunscreen, snacks and money for lunch if you need.
